happy love day: calgary family photographer

“You are like nobody since I love you.”

- Pablo Neruda

what i love:

i love my family.
i love my friends.
i love possibilities.
i love dreaming.
i love new beginnings.
i love to love.
i love photography.
i love valentine’s day.

This weekend I baked & decorated cupcakes with my kiddos.  We had sprinkles,  LOTS  and LOTS of sprinkles!

Our supplies:

My daughter and I also had a great time creating conversation heart candy “bark” for her class Valentine’s treat bags.
Bonus, it is SUPER (seriously) easy to make, I promise.

Seriously, just 5 simple steps:

1. melt a bag of white candy melts or white chocolate chips.

2. smooth chocolate onto a sheet of parchment paper (works best if it is lined onto a metal baking sheet).

3. add  desired amount of conversation hearts (facing up, of course-or not).

4. let cool & harden for about 4 to 6 hours.

5. gently break bark into desired size pieces, and voila, you are set!

Wishing you a beautiful day of love. xoxo

Thanks for stopping by! : )

Sherry Carr-Smith - I love your loves and I love you! And I love your photography, but you knew that.

2011: Do What You Love, Love What You Do: Calgary Family Photographer

Hello!  Welcome to 2011 (well, nearly a month into the new year).  I think it is going to be spectacular! : ) Above is a picture from my newly refreshed home office, I adore this print.  The walls were given a fresh coat of paint, new inspiration artwork hung on the walls and new furniture built to better suit my space.  I am in love with my new space (more pics to come).

This year is all about DOING WHAT I LOVE and LOVING WHAT I DO!  :)

I had some much-needed down time over the holidays which extended into 2011.  After Help-Portrait wrapped up at the beginning of December I had over a month to relax and rejuvenate.  I think I nearly forgot what R-E-L-A-X-I-N-G felt like. :)  I had a wonderful time with my family.  We baked cookies, watched holiday movies, forgot about bedtimes, decked the halls, trimmed our tree and all of the other fun things that happen over the holiday season.  As I began to step back and reflect on 2010, I realized just how precious this time is with my kids.  They are now ages six (how did that happen?) and nearly four!  Time is literally flying by, I know that sounds so cliche, but it is going by way too quickly.  I want to freeze time.  Oh, how I digress… so back to that time of reflecting. I began to think of how amazing this year was for me on the business + personal side.  I had sessions with a ton of amazing clients and maintained a steady pace throughout the year.  I connected with a lot of other photographers (both far and near), did my first-ever sessions out of the country (Boston was so much fun) and attended a few photog workshops. I learned so many lessons and definitely grew all along the way.   All of which helped realize where I am and where I want to go.  Moving forward, I know I need to limit the number of sessions I take on each month for the benefit of both my clients and my family.  These days are so precious.

My focus for 2011 is to spend more time with my family and nourish my business. Afterall, being a mother + a photographer are what I love to do!

Speaking of balance, I am cutting down the number of Boston sessions this year to just 4 spots.  Hard to do, since I had so many amazing clients last year. Registration and details coming soon.  The sessions will take place mid-May and the location is TBD at this point (I am open to suggestions).  The first priority will be given to families that had sessions in 2010 with me.  If you want to be on the sign-up list, you can email me ahead of the announcement.

Wishing everyone a beautiful 2011 filled with love, laughter and balance!

Thanks for stopping by! : )

Help-Portrait Calgary: Calgary Family Photographer Giving Back

Last year I was a part of something amazing.  It was the first year of the (now) annual Help-Portrait event.  The plans for last year’s event were fast and furious (to say the least). We had just a short few weeks to find organizations that would allow us the honor of photographing them.  This year I am so proud to report that I have teamed-up with an amazing group of Calgarians to orchestrate a much larger-scaled event in the heart of Kensington.  We are so fortunate to have a venue complete with sponsors and plenty of gracious volunteers that have spent hours coordinating this year’s event.

So, what exactly is Help-Portrait?

HELP-PORTRAIT IS A GLOBAL MOVEMENT OF PHOTOGRAPHERS USING THEIR TIME, GEAR AND EXPERTISE TO GIVE BACK TO THOSE IN NEED.

You can view a summary of Help-Portrait here.

If you know of anyone that could benefit from the gift of photography, please let them know about our event.  We want to reach out to our community and give out pictures for those that may not otherwise be able to afford photography.  We will be set-up for both families and individuals.

To learn more about Help-Portrait Calgary or to register for our event, you can go to our website here.   Not in Calgary?  No problem, Help-Portrait is a WORLD-WIDE event(!), so head over to the main page to find a Help-Portrait event site near you.

Thanks for stopping by!  : )

Laid back: Calgary Family Photographer

Okay, I know I must sound like a broken record, but I adore this family.  Their sessions are always just laid-back and easy going.  We all go with the flow and let the kids be themselves.  They don’t stress-out on tucked-in shirts, and perfect hair, they just have fun and let the moments happen, naturally.  And, do you know what happens?  First, we have an awesome time because there isn’t any pressure on the kids and secondly their personalities always shine right through in their pictures. Finally, I just adore how they let their guards down and rock-it-out with me.  Last year we did the cliche fall (well, winter really, we had snow on the ground-gottta love Calgary weather) family photo session in the park, however this year they wanted to change it up.  So, we headed down to Inglewood for a little bit of an urban vibe feel.  It was a great time as we strolled down a few blocks and stopped for shots along the way.  I cannot wait to do it again next year!

Enjoy and thanks for stopping by! : ) And, yes, we did color pictures too, just loving the simplicity of some black & whites these days.

Kristen - loveLOVE the 1st image.
i can HEAR the laughter…
it melts my heart. all childhood memories should be just that – filled with tickles and smiles… and giggles galore.
loving the bw images!!

Hope Walls - Gorgeous session – and I am completely in love with the door in the first shot – amazing!
